Bundles = ⌈ roof area × (1 + waste) ÷ 100 × bundles per square ⌉ Starter bundles = ⌈ starter LF ÷ LF per bundle ⌉ Cap bundles = ⌈ hip + ridge LF ÷ LF per bundle ⌉

⌈ ⌉ means round up. You cannot buy a partial bundle, and a single bundle short holds up the whole crew.

Worked examples

Architectural, 2,400 sq ft, 12% waste. 2,400 × 1.12 = 2,688 sq ft = 26.88 squares × 3 = 80.6 → 81 bundles.
Designer shingle, 5 bundles per square. Same roof: 26.88 × 5 = 134.4 → 135 bundles. Same coverage, far more to carry up the ladder.
Starter and cap. 220 LF of eaves and rakes at 100 LF per bundle → 3 bundles of starter. 60 LF of hips and ridge at 25 LF per bundle → 3 bundles of cap.

Can you cut 3-tab shingles into starter and ridge cap? Many roofers do, but most architectural shingles cannot be cut into cap, and manufacturer warranties often require the matching starter and hip & ridge products.
