Roofing Squares: Calculator and Explanation

Roofers price and order by the square. One square covers 100 square feet of roof surface, which is a 10 × 10 ft patch.

Squares in one line

Squares = roof area (sq ft) ÷ 100 Squares to order = squares × (1 + waste %) , rounded up to the next 1/3 square Bundles = squares to order × bundles per square (usually 3)

Most shingles come three bundles to a square, so suppliers round orders to the nearest third of a square (one bundle). Heavier architectural and designer shingles may be four or five bundles per square; the bundle calculator handles those.

Worked examples

From roof area. A roof measures 2,150 sq ft. 2,150 ÷ 100 = 21.5 squares. With 10% waste: 23.65, rounded up to 23.67 squares (71 bundles).
From the footprint. A 1,700 sq ft footprint at 7/12 (multiplier 1.1577) is 1,968 sq ft of roof, or 19.7 squares. Find the area first with the roof area calculator.

Why roofers use squares

Squares keep numbers small and line up with how material is packaged: shingle bundles, underlayment rolls and labor rates are all quoted per square. A quote of "$550 per square" means $5.50 per square foot of roof. When comparing bids, check whether the per-square price is applied to the measured area or the area with waste included; reputable estimates say which (see sources for current price ranges).

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet is a roofing square?

One roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface.

How many bundles are in a square?

Most 3-tab and standard architectural shingles are 3 bundles per square. Some heavy architectural and designer shingles are 4 or 5 bundles per square; the wrapper lists the coverage.

How many squares is a 2,000 sq ft house?

It depends on footprint and pitch, not living space. A 2,000 sq ft ranch with a 2,200 sq ft footprint (incl. overhangs) at 6/12 has about 24.6 squares of roof; a two-story house with the same living area has roughly half the footprint.

Should I add waste to squares?

Yes, when ordering. Add about 10% for simple gable roofs and 15% or more for hip roofs and roofs with valleys and dormers.
